This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
