The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
