Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
