Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A senior representative said the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
